Beyond the Drawing Board with Richie Cumming
In 2023 we are focusing all our work on the creative theme of ‘BEYOND’.
This theme is stretching us in what we think about and make, but also in what we share and how we share it!
We worked with the Unbound community to create a visual identity or ‘logo’ to help tie together our Beyond blogs, videos, newsletters and other comms pieces.
We enlisted the help of excellent community artist, Richie Cumming. Richie had facilitated the making of our ‘Painted Visual Argument’ mural- a collaborative exploration of questions of power made using lots of different techniques (paint, collage, sculpture).
We invited Richie to one of our Tuesday evening Unbound sessions. Supplied with plenty of paper, pens and markers, he asked us to write or draw out the word ‘Beyond’ as many times as we could.
Images of rocket ships, arrows, telephone lines and mountain scapes soon appeared on the pages in various colours and styles.
We voted on our favourites and made a shortlist of our top 5 doodles.
Richie took these away and worked up a first draft, inspired by the drawings of arrows.

The bold font was a hit but it needed some refinement. We wanted it to feel softer and more open, so Richie adjusted the sharp point of the arrow, changing it to a straight line with no outer edge – stretching into infinity!
So here it is, our ‘BEYOND’ logo!
