We Create Govanhill
If you’ve been in Govanhill recently, you might have spotted a vibrant new mural at Westmoreland Street…
We’re chuffed to have been involved in the making of this artwork, created through an exciting visual art project with our partners Glasgow Education Services & Glasgow CREATE.
The We Create Govanhill project brought together young people from Primary and Secondary schools in Govanhill. Working with visual artist Beth Shapeero and mural artist Ursula Kam-Ling Cheng, pupils created this original mural about what their area means to them.
Thanks to the easing of Covid-19 restrictions, Beth was able to deliver workshops in-person to P7 pupils at Cuthbertson Primary School, Holy Cross Primary School, St. Bride’s Primary School and Annette Street Primary School, during which pupils created drawings exploring their own relationship to Govanhill and what living in the area means for their identity.
Secondary pupils Keira Groves and Ashleigh Griffin from Shawlands Academy and Logan Graham and Lauren Gaffney from Holyrood Secondary School were then selected to work with Shapeero and Cheng to design the mural, based on the P7 pupils’ drawings.
Painting of the mural took place over the course of a week with lots of people from the Govanhill community getting stuck in- from helping with painting to litter picking and mowing the grass!
