This song was written during a Distant Voices song-writing session in the women’s wing of HMYOI Polmont in November 2018. ‘S’ explains that ‘this is a song about living behind a mask, pretending to be something you’re not. You don’t have to hide forever. [It] was inspired by my own journey from darkness into light. Exposing my true identity without shame or fear.’ C. Duncan adds that ‘S had an idea of chords and melodies she wanted to use, and was keen (after a bit of encouragement) to sing it herself. I suggested changing the chord pattern for the second verse and add in the odd 7th and 9th to create colour. From early on in the process we could hear vocal harmonies being sung in the chorus so between myself, and colleagues Alison and Claire we recorded them’. This is a project demo, recorded onsite as part of the workshop.
