Since our last session in April, we’ve been back in Bella this August. Over two days, we worked with a group of women - some brand new to Vox and songwriting, and some who had joined us in previous sessions in April. Eight new songs were written, and we returned for a third day to spend time together developing and recording them.

The songs reflect a huge range of experiences and emotions. Some look at what it means to leave the past behind and begin again. Others describe the feeling of being stuck in difficult cycles, but also finding signs of a way forward. There are songs about the ups and downs of relationships, about the distance and closeness between a mum and her son, and about the challenges of being judged and wanting to be trusted to get on with life. Addiction and the fears of life after prison were spoken about honestly, while other songs held memories of loved ones who continue to guide and support, even when they’re gone.

This work supports people to tell their own stories, to strengthen relationships that make change possible, and to challenge how we listen to each others voices. The songs don’t just stay in the room where they were written - they ripple outwards, offering insight, and reminding us why creativity matters in justice spaces.

All songs were written with support from Chris Duncan, Louis Abbott, Claire McKay, and Jill O'Sullivan.
