‘Alone’ is a collaboration between Martin B, Grace Dale and Louis Abbott. Martin has been part of the Unbound community for many years and has written a number of songs during that time. He makes a journey of over three hours to join our Friday sessions, which speaks to his commitment to the work and creative spaces.
Alone took shape over three weeks. Martin wrote the lyrics, Grace worked with him to develop the melody, and Louis recorded and produced the track, with input from Martin and Grace throughout. You can hear moments from the process at the beginning and end of the song - an excellent detail to have captured! This is also the first time Martin has sung on one of his songs.
The meaning behind 'Alone' is told by Martin in his own words:
I’ve spent parts of my life feeling lonely and the song is about how that felt - the impact it has on you and the world around you. It robs you of happiness and hope and replaces it with self-doubt, depression, and isolation. It makes you look too deep inside yourself and replay past mistakes and think you’re the only person to blame. It’s hard to be positive and see any light whilst you live with it. I decided one day that I’d had enough, that I wasn’t living but was just existing. It’s hard being honest with yourself, nevermind with friends or family. Now I look for the good in everything. Loneliness, once it finds you, never really leaves you, but you just find the things and people to keep it away. This song is available to listen to across streaming platforms.
