Over the Wall is a collection of original songs written in HMP Barlinnie.
Over three days in September, musicians, people serving sentences, members of our Unbound community, and prison officers came together to build on their songwriting skills and create a new album together. With Mental Health Week on the horizon in October, the group chose to explore themes of wellbeing, reflection, and hope.
The energy across the three days was really remarkable! Everyone brought something valuable - ideas, musical skill, and a willingness to collaborate - which made for an open and creative few days. With support from Foundation Scotland, the songs have now grown into a full album release, complete with original artwork for each track, adding a visual layer to the music and the stories behind it.
These songs were recorded within HMP Barlinnie, capturing the live energy of the performances and the atmosphere of the space. We hope that listeners can feel something of the care and honesty that went into these songs, and find moments of reflection or common ground within them.
You can read more about the songwriting process and the people involved here.
These sessions were supported by musicians C Duncan, Johnny Cypher and Scott Brice. Artwork by Gabi Fröden.
